The Local Haps: August 31st - September 6th

School's been back for a week now. The traffic jams have increased, there's less teenagers at the mall during the day, and hopefully there's less of them at the movies during the week which should make all of these special screenings a nice and quiet refuge. Check them out after the break!

Monday, August 31st
Alamo Drafthouse: One of the most spoiled movies of all time, THE USUAL SUSPECTS is also still great despite the ending being common knowledge ( I won't say what it is if you guys haven't seen it), you can figure out the mystery at 10:00 pm.

Tuesday, September 1st
Alamo Drafthouse: Starting off the Septemberg Steven Spielberg retrospective is the criminally underseen DUEL, starring Dennis Weaver, it features a man terrorized by an unknown driver of an eighteen wheeler through the desert.

Texas Theatre: To commemorate the tragic passing of wrestler/ass-kicker/bubblegum-chewer,  Rowdy Roddy Piper, today's TNT will be SCI-FIGHTERS. It is, of course, free and there will be a nice Roddy-themed pre-show.

Wednesday, September 2nd
Alamo Drafthouse: Continuing Septemberg, we have THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS at 7:00 pm. Starring Goldie Hawn and William Atherton playing a couple of small-time criminals who take on the State of Texas to retrieve their baby. Then later at 9:00 pm, there's the Asian Movie Madness, Well Go USA's free monthly screening series. This month we have the Jet Li vehicle, BADGES OF FURY where he plays a detective assigned to track down a murderer killing the ex-boyfriends of a rising star.

Thursday, September 3rd
Alamo Drafthouse: This is the big one. JAWS is one of the most important movies of all time. You can say that it kicked off summer blockbusters as a vital part of Hollywood or that it ruined cinema forever by turning this once-classy affair into mindless violence and entertainment. Whatever your feelings it also is one of the most thrilling movies of all time. You can watch this on the big screen at 7:30 pm.

Granada Theater: So tell me what you want, what you really really want, and what you want is a rad $3 screening of SPICE WORLD. It's actually a fun movie and even non-Spice Girls fans will get a kick out of it.

Friday, September 4th
Granada Theater: Thanks to STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, FRIDAY has been back in the collective consciousness. But let's not forget that this is a hilarious movie and it features the most tolerable Chris Tucker performance that doesn't take place in outer space.

Texas Theatre: The Cinewilde series is always a good time, showcasing the best in queer cinema. This time they're showing THE ADVENTURES OF PRISICILLA, THE QUEEN OF THE DESERT with an amateur drag queen show after the movie. You basically have your Friday night all planned for you.

Saturday, September 5th
Angelika Dallas: As part of a not-so-well advertised Studio Ghibli Festival, there will be a screening of acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki debut, NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND. This one starts at 11:00 am.

Sunday, September 6th
Alamo Drafthouse: LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is a movie that must be experienced on the big screen and you can today with a pristine 4K restoration at 1:00 pm. Make sure to buy some coffee and bring a blanket because this is a long one clocking in at 216 minutes.
