The Local Haps: February 24th - March 1st

We're iced in this week in Dallas. There might also be some snow coming. Even though there's great movies showing, there's no need to drive in crappy weather so stay in if the roads are bad. Nevertheless, here's some rad movies.

The Good, the Bad, and the Weird: Lesser Known Movies Made in Dallas

For tomorrow's special fundraiser for the Dallas Producers Association fundraiser, IT CAME FROM DALLAS at the Alamo Drafthouse happening tomorrow Thursday, February 19 at 7:30 pm. Everyone knows that JFK, BOTTLE ROCKET, ROBOCOP and even PRIMER were all filmed here. After the break you can check out some of the lesser known, weirder movies that were filmed here with some trailers and links for you to purchase or stream the movies.

Dallas will never be a place like New York or LA, but it's got some rad movies under its belt. You can find more info on IT CAME FROM DALLAS here and the Dallas Producer's Association here.

The Local Haps: February 16th - February 22nd

It's Oscar week! And there's a surprisingly little in the way of Oscar watching parties. Only the Texas Theatre is rocking one as far as we know. Anyway, check out the other non-Oscar related events going on this week including our Pick of the Week at Thin Line Fest.

Netflix Instant: TV and Movie Picks

It's Valentine's Day, and if you don't have a sweetheart to spend the day with, then there are a number of movies out there for you to enjoy. So grab some popcorn and your cat and enjoy!

HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME
I saw this film not too long ago and was very impressed with the story and atmosphere. The film is very tense and is brilliantly acted. A great thriller for those who seek a different kind of story.

This is a fun series the explores different aspects of the brain such as memory and what makes a person attractive. It's very well done and quite interesting, plus this is a great series all the family can enjoy.

MEAN GIRLS
This movie is so fetch. And what's better than watching early Lindsay Lohan and see the potential that was wasted away. Even though we've all seen this 100 times, it's still a watchable and quotable film to enjoy.

The Local Haps: February 9th - February 15th

I'll be honest, I thought there would be way more romance related movies this week, but there's a few really good special screenings this week that are worth checking out whether you're single or with your favorite lady/dude. Check them out after the break!

I'm sick so I can't think of a clever intro, but I can definitely think of a few good movies on Netflix!

BROTHERS BLOOM director Rian Johnson is mostly known for directing some of the most memorable episodes of BREAKING BAD. But he's done a couple of really good movies with this one and BRICK which we've talked about here before. This one deals with brothers played by Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo who are expert con men. They decided to do One Last Job and if you've seen movies, you know how well that goes.

This was a festival movie last year. I'm only recommending the movie because I find it to be an interesting mess. The movie itself is insanely dark with our protagonist being accused of the brutal murder of his girlfriend. He then starts growing horns that make everyone around him start telling the truth. The movie works soooooo well in the first two thirds of the movie and then it becomes a different movie altogether making it very uneven but it's also kind of cool to see Daniel Radcliffe acting so crazy.

I haven't seen this movie or the original. This appears to be a re-quel (remake/sequel) of it taking place 65 years after the original. The big deal here is that director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon also directed recent Sundance darling ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL, so it'll be cool to another of one his works here.

The Local Haps: February 3rd- February 9th

It's the season of love and assorted chocolates, and that makes you sick, then there are always a great selection of movies playing around DFW to keep your mind off of it. Yes, there are romance movies here, but there are plenty of other films including Oscar contenders, secret screening, and my pick of the week, a musical (of the non-romance variety)!

Super Bowl Trailer Round-Up!

As usual, the Super Bowl was a huge ratings giant and as always there was a sleuth of movie trailers that came on during the game. The strange thing is that no one seemed to be talking about them. It seemed that Katy Perry's halftime show was a bigger deal. To be honest, most aren't anything to write much about with the exception of the FURIOUS 7 trailer, which is amazing!!! The second best is the INSIDE OUT trailer for the Puppy Bowl. Anyway, here's some of the better trailers that played during the game.
