I'll be honest, while I love Halloween time much more, I'm always more interested to see what theaters program during Christmas. Do they go for standard holiday fare, or do they dig into the surprisingly numerous Christmas slasher sub-genre or movies that just happen to take place during Christmas. That all goes to say, that there's quite a bit of Christmas related programming this week in Dallas. Check them out after the break as well as my Pick of the Week!
Monday, December 1st
Alamo Drafthouse: SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT, the influential Santa slasher will be screening at 8:30 pm. Then if you like sportsball, there's a documentary by base-ketball player Steve Nash at 7:05pm, NASH: THE MOVIE. I usually wouldn't mention this type of screening, but it is sponsored by the Dallas Film Society and they're neat people.
Angelika Dallas: The Angelika doesn't have much in the way of special screenings, but it does have a good line up of movies including the recent FOXCATCHER, one of my favorites of the year, NIGHTCRAWLER, ST. VINCENT and Jon Stewart's ROSEWATER. Check listings here.
Tuesday, December 2nd
Alamo Drafthouse: JT SING-A-LONG!!! It's at 7:00 pm and it will be a sexy time.
Texas Theatre: To commemorate the new solar energy panels that will power the theater, there will be a free screening of HOME ALONE at 6:45 after a brief ribbon cutting ceremony. Then, Tuesday Night Trash returns tonight with DON'T OPEN UNTIL CHRISTMAS as always, it's free and it starts at 9:15 pm.
Wednesday, December 3rd
Alamo Drafthouse: I'll be real, the extent of my knowledge of A CHRISTMAS STORY is the chubby kid with the annoying face but I know it's a huge deal for a lot of people so it's good thing there's a special Action Pack quote along that features a special Chinese dinner menu!
Sundown At Granada: There will be a screening of one of top 5 favorite break up movies, HIGH FIDELITY, at 8 pm with the usual half off whiskey specials. Thankfully, the weather won't be TOO terrible, but I'd suggest a cozy blanket for sure.
Thursday, December 4th
Alamo Drafthouse: In what might be one of the best Christmas movies of all time, ELF is insanely re-watchable even when it's not the Christmas season. There's going to be a fun quote along at 7:45 pm with jingle bells, bubbles, and scratch n' sniff!
Texas Theatre: Music docs are always awesome and SOUND AND CHAOS: THE STORY OF BC STUDIOS sounds pretty interesting. The studio is where artists like Brian Eno, Swans, Sonic Youth and Angels of Light recorded but the movie deals with not only its history but its potential demise due to gentrification in Brooklyn.
Friday, December 5th
Texas Theatre: THE BABADOOK is one of the best movies out of Fantastic Fest. Dealing with a single mother and her son as they try to escape an evil spirit, it is a wonderful movie with a powerful message. While I personally did not find it scary many others did, so why not come and check out a late screening of 11:00 pm. In addition, there will be a screening of a documentary about author William S. Burroughs that has been restored and re-discovered since its 1983 debut. BURROUGHS: THE MOVIE will screen at 9 pm.
Saturday, December 6th
Alamo Drafthouse: PICK OF THE WEEK! BACK OF THE FUTURE is one of the best movie trilogies (even with the third one). If you can do it, I would recommend checking out the 3 picture marathon. It will feature 35mm print screenings and themed menu items that will be included in the $50 ticket price and it starts at 11 am. In addition, there will be a screening of LOVE ACTUALLY at 6:00 pm
Texas Theatre: There will be another HOME ALONE screening at 3pm so you can bring the kiddos along, and then at 8pm, there will be another BABADOOK screening if Friday's screening is too late for you.
Sunday, December 7th
Alamo Drafthouse: It's a busy day today with an early screening of 12:30 pm of WHITE CHRISTMAS at 1:15pm, then the great Master Pancake will return at 5:00pm for their awesome X-MAS SHOW which consists of clips and weird stuff of X-mas related stuff.
