The Local Haps - Turkey Week Edition

After having Jonesy do a great job with Local Haps in my absence, I'm back during this short Thanksgiving week. Thankfully (hahaha) there's a few really good screenings this week. Check them out after the break.

Wednesday, November 26th

Sundown at Granada: If you can brave the chill at night, you can enjoy half off whiskey at the Sundown followed by a screening of freakin' PURPLE RAIN (i.e. Prince acts like an asshole but plays awesome music) at 8:30 pm. Check out their upcoming movies here.

Texas Theatre: At 7pm, there will be a screening of the Portland bike culture doc, AFTERMASS: BICYCLING IN A POST CRITICAL MASS PORTLAND, which sounds really interesting. Dallas is going through a bit of a bike culture expansion. It should be interesting to see if we could ever get to the bike-friendly environment of Portland. Later that night at 9:20, there is a 35mm screening of INTERSTELLAR.

Thursday, November 27th

Alamo Drafthouse: You made small talk and you ate with the family and distant relatives, now come out for the 2:30 pm showing of the classic PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES.

Friday, November 28th
Alamo Drafthouse:

Texas Theatre: The third installment of the found footage series, VHS: VIRAL will screen at 10:30 pm. Check out Jonesy's review here. But if you want something of a lighter fare, you can come earlier at 6:00 pm for the Community Cornucopia potluck dinner and a screening of the recently departed Mike Nichols classic comedy THE BIRDCAGE at 8:00pm. Make sure to bring a few bucks to donate to the Home for the Holidays charity.

Saturday November 29th
Alamo Drafthouse: Tough Guy Cinema will have the most badass marathon, MAXIMUM MAX: THE MAD MAX TRILOGY MARATHON at 11:00 am. ROAD WARRIOR is easily one of the best action movies of all time so even the chance of seeing this on the big screen is worth it. It just so happens that this is my Pick of the Week as well!

Texas Theatre

Sunday, November 30th
Alamo Drafthouse: I can't make any "Khaaaaaaan!" related jokes off the top of my head, so I'll say come out at 12:30 to see STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN.

Texas Theatre: Today is the only screening for AWAKE: THE LIFE OF YOGANANDA at 4 pm about the Swami that brought yoga to West back in the 1920's. There will also be an additional VHS VIRAL screening at 8 pm.
