When J.J. Abrams STAR TREK came out in 2009, I made a, what I thought was, smart bet with my cohort about which film would make more at the box office opening weekend. I picked STAR TREK. He picked TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. Needless to say that even though I picked the better film, I got my butt whipped and owed him two movies.
STAR TREK went on to be a surprise hit for me. Every once in a while a film will do this. I go in with next to no expectations, and I leave being completely shocked at how much I enjoyed the film. It became my go to lazy Sunday movie. I have been anxiously waiting for the sequel once I knew all the major players, including director J.J. Abrams, would be back.
Here's the official synopsis:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
We don't have a full length trailer yet, that will be released next week. And if you're lucky enough to check out THE HOBBIT in IMAX, you will be treated to a nine minute preview of the INTO THE DARKNESS. But for now, feast your eyes on the jam-packed teaser.
I am so glad this will kick off the summer season of 2013. And if I didn't know Benedict Cumberbatch was in this film, I would have sworn they got Jeremy Irons. Cumberbatch's voice is so menacing and drips of evil. Still no official word on who he plays, but I'm still sticking by our theory. The first film had a intimate feel to it, while this one already feels broader in scope and therefore filled with more danger. Also, is that the Enterprise crashing in the water??
What is even more exciting is a longer trailer will be released next week.
STAR TREK INTO THE DARKNESS will be released May 17, 2013 directed by JJ Abrams and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
