I will say that seeing a movie a day was a lot more difficult than I imagined. I did try to challenge myself with only seeing new movies, but apart from NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and TUCKER AND DALE VS. EVIL, they were all new to me and found Netflix Instant. Seeing as I have never been a horror fan of the caliber of some my friends, I was really surprised at how the horror genre can be really boring at times. On the flip side, I saw how easy it is for a movie to be pretty amazing given the right chemistry of the cast or a change to the story. And I have to say that within, the horror genre, there are a lot gems to be found. Check out five of them below.
First hearing about this movie as a Mondo poster, I was pretty intrigued about it. What set this movie apart for me was the fact that I absolutely hated everyone but the main villain, Cropsy. They are all just shit-head kids, with one who was for all purposes a rapist. There's just something interesting about the 80's horror movies where the kids are terrible people, and yet we're supposed to root for them. Then again, this was the decade where Ferris Bueller was considered cool so maybe it was just a product of its times.
This one was a surprise for me. Having just seen the original Hitchcock classic and becoming enamored by it, I was a little skeptical by the fact there were so many damn sequels to it. But since my bestest bud in the whole world, @ReelDistraction, recommended it to me, so I gave it a shot. I have to say that the movie was actually a lot better than it has any right to be. It's creepy as hell, and it keeps you guessing until the end.

James Gunn, the director for SLITHER, will be directing a Disney/Marvel movie. Who would've thought someone that directed a movie about a small town being affected by an alien invasion would get to do that? This is probably the most "fun" movie of the month. There's lots of really fucked up body type of horror that has obvious Cronenberg-ian influences and a wicked sense of humor that is always welcome. Added bonus: more Nathan Fillion. You can always use more Nathan Fillion.
This one was hot on the heels of my buddy Noah's recommendation as well. The sheer creep factor of this movie just put it above the other ones with dealing with a creepy apartment and a distraught model. This haunted house movie was filled some insane imagery and a great story.
I had to cheat and make it a tie. I wouldn't see one without the other, and I have to give them both props. Given that I wrote an entire Netflix column on Vincent Price and these two movies, I won't go into detail. But I was just captivated by his performance, the beautiful cinematography of MASQUE, and the sense of paranoia in HAUNTED HILL. Check out my Netflix column where I talk about it more in-depth.
That's it for me this October. I'll be doing this project next year as well and hopefully be documenting a little more in-depth. Below I listed the other 25 movies I saw:
