Comic-Con 2012 has finally come to a close, and even though not many of us were able to secure any of exclusive Mondo posters (like the one above), we received plenty of movie news that will make the next couple years quite interesting.
The big panel which a plethora of new information was released was at the Marvel panel. After the staggering success of THE AVENGERS this summer, which has made 1.4 billion dollars so far, Marvel began with a video reel stating, "Phase Two Begins!"
- First, Marvel announced the next two individual Avenger films in the pipeline after IRON MAN 3: THOR: THE DARK WORLD, with a November 8, 2013 release date and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, with an April 4, 2014 release date. The Captain America film will be bring Bucky Barnes back to the present day.
- Up next was the plans for a GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY film. This film will follow a team of intergalactic heroes as they try and protect the galaxy. At the panel, Marvel stated the team will definitely include Starlord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot, and everyone's favorite, Raccoon Rocket. In 2010, a limited six edition comic was released about the GUARDIANS and the Thanos Initiative...sound familiar? Thanos was that creepy, elusive, and evil super being conversing with Loki at the end of THE AVENGERS film. Tie in? Very possible. GUARDIANS will be released August 1, 2014. For a more thorough look at the team, check out John Gholson's 'Guide' over at movies.com.
- And finally, a darling of this site, director Edgar Wright came out to promote his next, next film, ANT-MAN. He is currently working on another buddy film with Nick Frost and Simon Pegg which will be release in 2014, so it's a safe bet that Ant-Man will be the next project. He says he has, along with Joe Cornish, written two drafts of the script since SCOTT PILGRIM. The script, he says, is action packed with a "nod to the original tales....Ant-Man will kick your ass, one inch at a time!" Wright stated there is no casting news yet.
Last week, we showed you the teaser poster for Guillermo del Toro's new film, PACIFIC RIM. In his panel, del Toro screened a few minutes of his film featuring 25-story tall machines (Jaegars) and sea monsters (Kaiju). Del Toro said the film will showcase at least nine Kaijus and seven Jaegars, each with a different and distinguished ability. The synopsis of the film is giant Kaijus have started rising from the sea that begins a war that starts taking millions of lives. Jaegars are created to combat these monsters, which are controlled by two operators. Del Toro said he as set out not to make a war movie, but to make more of an adventure film. PACIFIC RIM stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day. Del Toro says after this panel, they are all on radio silence until the it is released July 13, 2013.
And finally, Peter Jackson was on hand to preview some footage from one of the most anticipated films of the holiday season, THE HOBBIT. Jackson confirmed that the film will be broken up into two films, THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN. Based on the J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, The Hobbit tells the journey of Bilbo Baggins acquiring the famous ring that would eventually lead to The Lord of the Rings road trip. Even though the preview footage was shown at the typical 24 frames per second, he actually filmed the movie in 3-D at 48 frames per second, which allows for greater film clarity. Reactions of the preview footage has been nothing but positive, and even viewing the trailer, it appears Jackson may have struck gold again. THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY will be released December 14, 2012.
