It's a Stark Reunion in the SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D Trailer

Back in the days of me actually being into video games, I got Silent Hill. That was a horrible mistake since to this day, it's one of the freakiest and scariest video games I've played. Cue to the when the SILENT HILL movie came out. It was a decent enough movie captured the tone of the game well. It felt like I was one of the few people that actually enjoyed it. Now thanks to Machinima's YouTube channel, we have the trailer for the sequel, SILENT HILL: REVELATION. Check out the trailer after the jump.

CLOUD ATLAS Trailer Shows Everything and Yet Nothing

Here's another book to add to your list to read before the film comes out. The Wachowskis have been hard at work on their latest endeavor, CLOUD ATLAS, which is based on the best selling 2004 novel. 

The film synopsis is described as "an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution." (source EPI)

Makes total sense right? Don't worry, the new trailer clears everything up for you.

I'm still a little lost, though. At least from the trailer, I'm getting a BABEL and THE FOUNTAIN. I dig the whole idea of the story lines interweaving, and I'm hoping The Wachowskis have created something unique and coherent. It's an epic cast, and I'm keeping my hopes up that the film will be just as epic and not end up in a cluster.

STEP UP REVOLUTION Review- He Said/She Said

STEP UP: REVOLUTION

Netflix Instant: Cool TV and Movie Picks- Fantastic Fest Edition!

Look at me! I actually have a Netflix column with a theme! I'm always jealous of my cohort because he is so much better at themes than I am. I would like to take absolute full credit for this theme, but it was definitely his idea. With that said, Fantastic Fest is a wonderful movie festival that happens ever September out of Austin. We were lucky enough to go last year, and we cannot wait to head back in a couple months. Here are some titles that have graced the Fantastic Fest that you can now enjoy!

BULLHEAD

I missed this one last year, but Javi wrote an absolute fantastic piece about this film that makes me want to watch and take notes. This film was released by Drafthouse Films and was nominated for an Oscar this past year. 

SOUND OF NOISE

In my most recent trip to Austin a couple months ago, I saw this unique little film. I didn't know much about the film going in, but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. A tone-deaf cop is on the trail of a renegade percussionists who terrorizing a Swedish city...with music. It's a fun, absurdist comedy with some really interesting music numbers. Here's the short it's based off of. 

KNUCKLE

One of the features of this past Fantastic Fest, KNUCKLE is a documentary following two Irish families who settle their differences through good old fashioned bare-knuckle fighting. During the festival, the star of the film, James Quinn McDonagh, was challenged to a boxing match by Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League. We were able to witness this battle, and McDonagh was the clear winner, though he probably took it a little easy on League considering League's wife had just given birth to twins a days before.

LIFE OF PI Trailer Drops and Makes Me Want a Pet Tiger

After years of development with many different directors attached, including M. Night Shyamalan and Alfonso Cuaron, LIFE OF PI has its first official trailer. Ang Lee came on in 2009 and filming has finally wrapped. Based on the book of the same name, PI follows a young man, Pi, as he survives a sinking of a freighter and finds himself on a lifeboat with a tiger.

MAN OF STEEL Trailers Drop!

Attached to THE DARK KNIGHT RISES this weekend was the much anticipated teaser for MAN OF STEEL. Now, since we saw Batman at an IMAX screening, we did not get to see this trailer. Strangely enough, we didn't have any trailers before RISES. But never fear, that's what the internet is for!

There are two different versions of the trailer. Well, it's actually the same version but with two different voice overs: one by Kevin Costner, as Superman's dad, Jonathan Kent, and the other by Russell Crowe, as Superman's biological father, Jor-El.

THE MASTER Trailer Drops!

It's been a while, but director Paul Thomas Anderson is back. We haven't seen anything from him since his 2007's THERE WILL BE BLOOD (a close and important movie to this site), and now he returns with THE MASTER.

The plot follows a young, charismatic intellectual (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as he launches a religious organization following WWII. A drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) becomes his right hand man, but as the new religion begins to have a fervent following, the drifter finds himself questioning the belief system of his mentor.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Synopsis: The final chapter of Nolan's Batman trilogy. Batman must come out of hiding to defeat Bane who has plans to take over and bring down Gotham.

To commemorate the end of what can only be described as one of the more important movie franchises in recent history, we will be doing something a little unusual. We will be posting short separate reviews here. Then, later on in the weekend, we will be posting a discussion that will encompass the movie in a more spoiler-y manner and in context of the entire series of movies.


On a more serious note, regarding the terrible news coming out of Aurora, Colorado, we offer our condolences to the victims of the heinous shooting. We don't deal with politics here much and now is not the time, but rather a time of respect for the loss of fellow fans that were lost in a senseless crime.

Javi here with my Netflix picks for the week. I was going to try to go for a cool superhero themed column in honor of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. But instead, I found three movies where the lead actors star or at least play a major role in!

MONDO Appeases the Whiners and Will be Making an Olly Moss THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Available for 24 Hours!

As movie nerds that live relatively close to the Alamo Drafthouse, we are big fans of their boutique poster department Mondo. For those that aren't familiar, they release gorgeous prints by contemporary artists and even the legendary Drew Struzan. They always release their posters in very limited quantities at random times of the day. The only way to know when they will be on sale is to follow their Twitter account. Thanks to my own luck and Jonesy's awesome X-mas and birthday presents, I've managed to snag a couple of awesome pieces. The problem that happens every time, especially if you're on Twitter with movie nerds, is how many people ALWAYS complain about not getting one. There is nothing worse than seeing man children bitching about not getting a movie poster online. Mondo posters and their economy are what they are for better or for worse. There will always be more posters that I want than what I will be able to get. Unfortunately, it is what it is.

But! The good folks at Mondo have heard the cries. They will be commemorating what will be one of the most popular movies of the year along with one of its most popular artist by releasing the Olly Moss THE DARK KNIGHT RISES print you see above. The catch is that they will be printing as many as are ordered for a full 24 hours.  The poster will be $40 and then they will be offering a 180 limited edition varian for $100. This is the closest that you will ever get to having a retail Mondo poster release, so jump on it.

Javi's Top Five of The Year (So Far)

Obviously it's a little later than the halfway point of the year; however, I did want to just check in with you guys and share my favorite movies of the year so far. As keeping with my particular standard, I will not recommend or post any movies that you cool kids could not see in a theatre near you, so movies from film festivals are completely out.

Jonesy's Top Five of the Year (So Far)

We're only half-way through the year, and if I'm being honest, making this list wasn't the easiest to do. Unfortunately it wasn't because there were so many films to choose from, but there hasn't been many films that have stuck with me. I'm hoping the second half of the year proves to be better, but for now, in no particular order, here are my top five films (and some honorable mentions) for 2012...so far:

Did you know that Comic-Con isn't all about movies? Hard to believe since most of the news that comes out feels like it's just about film, but there's always a plethora of TV news and previews that get released as well.

Comic-Con Round Up of All the Movie Madness: Marvel Cinematic Universe, PACIFIC RIM, and THE HOBBIT

Comic-Con 2012 has finally come to a close, and even though not many of us were able to secure any of exclusive Mondo posters (like the one above), we received plenty of movie news that will make the next couple years quite interesting.

Netflix Instant: Cool TV and Movie Picks

I'm not sure how he does it, but Javi is always better at writing his Netflix columns with themes. Again, mine isn't themed, but I have a TV series, foreign film, and documentary that have all found their place in my heart. 

SPORTS NIGHT

The Aaron Sorkin comedy that aired in the 90s and was way before its time. It's strange that this witty show was actually on prime time television and not housed at HBO. Nevertheless, it only last for two seasons, but its very Sorkin with its witty banter and character moments.

LET THE BULLETS FLY

The first film that I saw at last year's Fantastic Fest. I wasn't sure what I was in for, but I thoroughly enjoyed this Robin Hood-esque tale. At first, this seemed like it would be a series caper drama, but it actually turned out to be a fun and somewhat goofy tale. You can check out my Fantastic Fest review here!

THE SWELL SEASON
One of my favorite musical duos and now I finally get to see their documentary! I have loved The Swell Season ever since I stumbled upon their first film, ONCE. In fact, that film is one of the first indie and obscure films that Javi and I found we had in common. I cheered when they won the Oscar for their song, "Falling Slowly," and now I cannot wait to watch their documentary.

OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Teaser Drops!

Unfortunately, we are not at Comic-Con this year, but thankfully between twitter and YouTube, it can almost feel like we're right in the midst of nerds fighting for swag and standing for hours in line for Hall H.

One great thing that always comes out of Comic-Con are the trailers. Studios use this con to promote the hell out of all their big releases. One of the first trailers to come out is for Sam Raimi's OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL. OZ is based on the book by L. Frank Baum which is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, which we all know and hold dear to our hearts.

Sometimes I think we forget how awesome celebrities can be. Sure, they can be spunky and witty during interviews, but I love seeing some of my favorites step out and do something silly for the sake of comedy.

DINOSAURS VS. ALIENS Sounds Just As Bananas As You Think It Is

This was the best I could think of, y'all.

Javi here. So, I know that we complain all of the time about Hollywood not having any original ideas left over? Well, you can all stop the complaining now! Auteur director Barry Sonnenfeld along with renowned comic book writer, Grant Morrison are teaming up to bring us the story of the struggle between the noble indigenous natives trying to fend off foreign invaders from taking over their land and using up all of its resources. Of course, I am talking about the upcoming DINOSAURS VS. ALIENS. Thanks to Blastr via Pajiba, we have a trailer for the upcoming motion comic that will serve as a prequel to the movie. Has Benedict Cumberbatch's Villain Identity Been Revealed?

STAR TREK was a definite surprise when it came out a couple years ago. I think expectations were that it would be good, but no one could have really predicted how fun and actually great it ended up being. Now we're still a little less than a year away from the sequel, and this film is filled with even more speculation than the first one.

As we reported back in January, WDYMS sweetheart, Benedict Cumberbatch had landed the role of the main villain of the sequel. Ever since that announcement, there's just been rumor after rumor about which villain he would be. Badass Digest first broke that one of the more infamous bad guys in the Star Trek series, Khan, would not be the villain. Instead, their secret source stated this film would focus more on a "classic" Trek character:

It’s definitely a character that will make fans of TOS excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named.

Then, this interesting info came out today. Karl Urban, who plays Bones in the film, was giving an interview to SFX about his upcoming film, DREDD, and may have let Cumberbatch's identity out of the bag when talking about working with him on the movie:

He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.

Whoops! So if Urban is correct, then Mitchell is an acquaintance of Kirk from the original TV series. Mitchell ends up getting telepathic and telekinetic god-like powers, and in the end, he ends up battling Kirk in a showdown, like you do.

So, did Urban actually let it slip a key bit of information about the sequel? Or is he just being a troll? Good thing we have until next May to speculate!



STAR TREK 2 will be released May 17, 2013 starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Take the First Look at Guillermo Del Toro's Rowbits for his New Movie, PACIFIC RIM!

Javi here. If you don't know, I'm a fan of robots. I'm also a fan of movies. I'm a bigger fan of robots in movies that are not directed by Michael Bay. With that being said, I am so excited for director Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming PACIFIC RIM. This was the project that was started after his previous movie, AT THE MOUNTAIN OF MADNESS, was cancelled. PACIFIC RIM, according to IMDB, is about "When an alien attack threatens the Earth's existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace."

Now, with this poster coming to you thanks to Badass Digest, shows the exact scale of the robots. That is to say, they're freaking huge! This movie is looking to be the culmnation of a lot of good things finally coming together, an actual Guillermo Del Toro movie, guys getting into huge robots and then figting monsters in said huge robots. This is basically a serious look at all of those crazy Super Sentai shows from Japan that inspired the robot/monster parts of the Power Rangers series. Plus, it stars Idris Elba. So what do you guys think? I'm really interested to see how they work on the scale of these machines and the monsters. I want to be in awe of them and I really hope that the movie gets this across. Netflix Instant- Cool TV & Movies - "What's the meaning of life?" Edition

Javi here. I've been feeling all contemplative and stuff lately. So the movies I'm highlighting today are probably not the most lighthearted, but I think that they're worth watching because they're contemplative and stuff about life. Check them out after the jump.

COMPLIANCE Trailer Drops!

It seems that there's a film every year that causes a stir at Sundance. Last year it was THE WOMAN, and this year it was Craig Zobel's psychological thriller, COMPLIANCE. The first screening at Sundance was met with walkouts and shouting matches during the Q&A's.

We were lucky enough to see this film at this year's Dallas International Film Festival. Even though I squirmed in my seat and felt so much anger during the film, it ended up being one of my favorites of the festival. It delves in and gets under your skin and never lets up. There even was a very, very heated Q&A after the screening I attended. I had never seen a movie draw that kind of reaction before.

Now that it's made its way through the festival circuit, we have our first trailer for its upcoming release.

Just to give everyone a heads up, this ended up being more of a discussion about the movie than an actual review. The points that we discuss are very interesting and worth talking about so please, if you have seen the movie go ahead and give this a read. If you haven't had a chance to see the movie, see it first because it 's wonderful and definitely worth your time, but then come back and read this!
